The Studio Art 1 Course is a one- year 9-12th grade visual arts course. This is an entry-level class where students will develop skills and knowledge of the elements and principles of design and judgment critique, as well as gain exposure to a wide range of artworks.
Our UC certified Art course is designed to challenge students by teaching them about art history, various art media, and techniques in order to enhance their understanding of the what art is and how it is created…
In our class we strive to create an environment that promotes strong self-expression in our students
Working with different mediums (Multimedia)
Students will experiment with various art mediums, including but not limited to graphite, charcoal, pastel, paint, and collage materials. They will be able to utilize these various art mediums in projects that involve a working knowledge of techniques, manipulation, and an understanding of the medium’s inherent qualities. Our students will have the opportunity to showcase their creativity by participating in exhibitions of their artwork both on campus and in the local community.
Art Workshops with Various Artists
Art in itself comes in many different shapes and forms, and people create it using more mediums than what could ever be covered in a single classroom. Because of this, we choose to bring in guest instructors who can come and convey current, realistic information and their perspective on the medium they have chosen. Students will be given the opportunity to work with these guests in order to gain a better understanding of how an individual can work towards perfecting their own techniques.
Critique / Collaborate
With guidance from the instructor students will learn to critique and explore different terminology to better enhance artwork and build confidence as an artist. Through collaborative critiquing students will be able to improve their self-esteem, social abilities, talents, and potential in a safe environment. Once students are able to identify their weak areas, they will be able to begin refining their methods or techniques in order to improve on all of their projects.
Art Off Campus
In order to help students establish an understanding of the historical and cultural significance through which art is created, part of our curriculum will include visiting museums and art studios. We also use our local environment as a source of inspiration for the class and to create a fun break away from the traditional classroom. Having Monterey Beach and Lake El Estero within walking distance allows us to incorporate these beautiful locations into our class whenever needed.
